So much information everyday. As we are bombarded daily, we might get the illusion that we are actually being offered many different perspectives by traditional media because it appears the number of companies that we are dealing with has expanded. Not so.
Based on an excellent infographic from Frugal Dad, the reality is that media sources have never been more consolidated. Here are some interesting nuggets from the analysis.
1. In the US, six media giants control 90% of all TV, news, radio and film. (General Electric, News Corp., Disney, Viacom, Time Warner and CBS)
2. In 1983, 90% was controlled by 50 companies
3. 232 media executives control what is being seen by 277 million Americans
4. The Big 6 control 70% of your cable
5. 178 million unique users read Time Warner news every month
6. News Corp owns the top newspaper on three continents – North America, Europe and Australia
7. Clear Channel owns 1,200 radio stations
So even though there is more, there is actually less.

Enjoying your blog very much Webman.
Media consolidation is a major problem.
In the late 70’s and early 80’s, politics in general wasn’t discussed by
our crowd. Vietnam was over, we all got jobs, and times were OK, in spite
of the Iranian hostage crisis.
Then Reagan fired the air traffic controllers, and the class war was on.
The working class should have occupied Wall Street then… but we cowered.
30 years later, the polarization of wealth is worse than at any time since the gilded age.
Why do Limbaugh, Hannity, and O’Reilly make 10 million or more a year ?
Because they convince 40% of the population that the enemy is welfare…. while
they espouse the free-market capitalism that lets oil companies merge and charge $4 a
gallon for gasoline…. and banks merge and pay us less than 1% on our deposits…. and
the ruling class (Murdoch, et al) is happy to pay them this money because they convince
the uninformed populace that we should fight with each other… while THEY walk off with all
the fucking money.
Of course, I’m retired, so I can trash corporate America to my heart’s content. I worked for them for 20 years, and I know what they’re like. Cronyism, nepotism, and blatant favoritism.
Technical competence ? Who gives a shit about that ?
